Set and Costume Designer - Ballad Boys

Alison Johnson

Alison Johnson, originally from Southern Maryland was always very involved with the arts. Raised by two very creative parents, both artists themselves, she grew up filling her time with art projects, puppetry and theater all the way through high school. In high school Alison explored designing for theatre, creating costume ensembles and wild makeup designs, as well as scenic painting. After two years of continued education at the Community College of Southern Maryland she was heavily encouraged by her art teacher to pursue an art degree beyond community college.

In 2004, Alison was accepted at the University of the Arts for the brand new Technical Design program. While at UArts Alison was given many chances to shine as a designer and leader. In her last semester she designed costumes for “Into the Woods” for which she won an award for excellence in design at graduation. Now with a BFA in Technical Theatre Design she focuses on Costume, Makeup and Wig design.

Alison works with many independent film companies in the Philadelphia area demonstrating her knowledge of special effects makeup and wig skills, as well as having worked with many theaters and designers also. Over the past few years has interned for both the Arden Theatre Company and the New Jersey Opera Theatre, and assisted many designers such as Mark Mariani, Richard St. Clair and Millie Hiibel.

Professional credits include, Set and Costume design for the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Theater Festival's production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” and Wardrobe for Azuka Theatre’s production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. University credits include, Costume design for “Into the Woods”, “The Cradle Will Rock”, “You Can’t Take it With You” and “A My Name is Alice”.

She is a member of a new company, Theatre Revolution and will be designing a production of “This is Our Youth” in July as well as designing for Aspire Arts production of “Ballad Boys” for the Philly Fringe in August, which she is more than excited about.
